Setup the Memorystick Reader (5.8.2002)

I do have an old 8MB Memorystick, which I like to use with the notebook. Since the default kernel is not aware of the memorystick reader (connected to one of the USB hubs, an additional entry in drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h is needed. I tried some of the existing entries with the adjusted vendor id (0x054c) and product id (0x0069). However I had no success. But then I found this page (Japanese I guess). Anyhow the interesting part (for me) was

UNUSUAL_DEV( 0x54c, 0x0069, 0x0000, 0x9999,

             "Sony",
             "Memorystick MSC-U03",
             US_SC_UFI, US_PR_CB, NULL,
             US_FL_SINGLE_LUN | US_FL_START_STOP ),

Adding this to drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h does the trick. After a compiling the modules and installing the new usb-storage.o The memory stick is available as /dev/sda. Fdisk reports no partitions on that device an mounting /dev/sda fails. But mounting /dev/sda1 works fine.

Memorystick and USB disk (5.8.2002)

When making the USB disk available it was assigned /dev/sda. The same device is now used for the memorystick reader. Next I have to find out what happens, when there is no memorystick in the reader. but the USB disk attached - and all the other combinations:

Memorystick inserted

USB disk attached

Memorystick device

USB disk device

YES

NO

/dev/sda1

n/a

NO

YES

/dev/sda1 (not available)

/dev/sdb

YES

YES

/dev/sda1

/dev/sdb

So that's simple. Adjust the USB disk entry in /etc/fstab and add one for the memorystick (An adjusted copy of the /dev/fd0 entry). On the desktop create a new "disk" entry with the device /dev/sda1 and adjust the earlier created entry for the USB disk (change device to /dev/sdb).

Crypto filesystem on the memory stick

The basic idea is to be able to store sensitive data on the notebook and to be able to easily remove the storage medium.

SuSE 8.1

The MemoryStick works out of the box. However the directory /media/memorystick and the desktop link have to added. And of course the /etc/fstab has also to be modified.
